Davey L Whitney Sr, better known as "The Wiz" was a collegiate basketball coach. His first love was baseball. He played shortstop for the Kansas City Monarchs from 1952-1954. He left the Monarchs to pursue a coaching career at Burt High School in Clarksville, TN. While at Burt High School he won the Black National High School Championship in 1961. He left Burt High School to begin his collegiate career in 1964 at Texas Southern University, where he stayed until 1969. In 1969 he went to Alcorn A & M College, until 1989, where he fondly became known as "The Wiz'. There he amassed many accomplishments. He is the winningest coach in Alcorn State basketball history. During the NAIA tournament the school's name was changed to Alcorn State University. He won the SWAC regular season 12 times and the SWAC tournament 6 times. He was the 1st coach of an HBCU to play in the NCAA tournament. Where his teams made 9 appearances. Prior to playing in the NCAA tournament his team was invited to play in the NIT. His 1st invitation to the NIT proved to be a historic win against Mississippi State in 1979. It was the first ever meeting of the 2 schools in the state's history. He and his team went onto qualify for the NIT on 2 other occasions.
